Racist trade card promoting Joshua Walker’s bone fertilizer and depicting a caricature of an African American boy in a tree trying to take bird eggs from a nest. The barefooted boy is attired in a straw hat that is torn at the top and on the brim and a white, long-sleeved shirt that covers to his thighs. The shirt has a large tear on the left shoulder exposing his chest and arm. With his mouth open, the boy stands on a branch in a tree full of pink flowers. He holds a branch with his right hand and reaches his left hand towards a bird’s nest with two eggs. A yellow and black birds flies away in the lower left. Joshua Walker was a fertilizer merchant who was active circa 1880s-1900 in Baltimore, Md.

Racist trade card promoting William S. Scull & Company’s Champion Coffee and depicting a caricature of an African American man riding a mule while carrying bags of Scull’s coffee. The barefooted man is portrayed with exaggerated features and is attired in a brimmed hat, a polka-dotted, long-sleeved shirt, and plaid pants. He carries large sacks labeled, "Scull’s Champion," underneath each arm as he rides on a mule. In the right perched on a tree, a black crow says to the man, "Every body uses Scull’s Champion Coffee." An owl on another branch of the tree says, "So they do." The man turns his head back towards the birds and remarks in the vernacular, "who said da dont." Joab Scull founded the business which imported, packaged, and distributed tea and coffee in 1831. His son William S. Scull was in charge of the business under the name William S. Scull & Company from 1858 until his death in 1916. They had a large warehouse and mill at Front and Federal Streets, Camden, N.J. William C. Scull succeeded the Company, which changed its name to the Boscul Coffee Company in 1947. R.C. Williams & Co. then acquired the business in 1959.

The barber, in the left,is depicted holding a razor in his right hand and the pig’s snout in his left. The man is attired in a white shirt with turned up collar, a black bowtie, a green and white checkered apron, and blue pants. The pig, seated chest out, leans back in the barber’s chair. The animal wears a barber’s cape. On a table next to the barber is a shaving mug filled with shaving foam and holding a shaving brush. The man is depicted with exaggerated features. W.M. Lyon worked as a jeweler in Chester Depot, Vermont beginning in 1877.

Racist trade card promoting I. Knopf’s shoe store and depicting a racist caricature of an African American man portrayed with exaggerated features and carrying two bouquets of flowers. Shows the rotund, African American man attired in a yellow hat, a monocle, a white shirt with a red striped collar, a blue bowtie, a yellow waistcoat with red checks, a purple jacket, white gloves, yellow pants, and brown shoes. He holds up two multi-colored flower bouquets, including red roses and white daisies, in his hands. Isidor Knopf (1848-1934) had a store selling shoes and luggage at 822 Market Street, Philadelphia in the 1880s. In the 1900s, he became a pawnbroker at 2501 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia. He advertised in the newspapers as I. Knopf & Sons when he sold forfeited clothing and jewelry from his pawnbroking business as late as 1910.

An account of the resource
Racist trade card promoting James S. Kirk & Co.’s Satinet soap and depicting a caricature of an African American boy carrying an oversized branch of cotton and a red cloth that trails behind him. Shows the African American boy attired in a torn straw hat, a white collared shirt, white overalls, and white shoes walking with his right leg lifted up. Over his shoulder he carries an oversized branch of cotton with his right hand. Under his left arm he carries a bolt of red cloth which has come unfurled in a train behind him. The cloth reads, “Satinet.” James S. Kirk (1818-1886) began his soap manufactory in 1839 in Utica, New York. He moved his company to Chicago in 1859, offering a variety of soaps including, White Ceylon, Satinet, Calendar, White Russian, and Coronet. The factory was demolished in 1929, and the Company was sold to Proctor & Gamble in 1930.
