Ferdinand Julian Dreer’s chief hobby was collecting autographs. He started with two documents and over time he was able to amass more than 15,000 items from some of the world’s most prominent and intriguing public figures. Owing to this interest, Dreer became acquainted with many people in the world of arts and letters, politics, education, clergy, business, and international affairs. As he was aware of such a collection’s potential impact on scholarship and society, Dreer donated all of his holdings to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, with which he had been associated for many years as the institution’s vice president.

Racist trade card promoting E.J. Finnerty Jr. & Co.’s patent medicines and depicting a crying African American baby that is suspended from a tree branch. In the center of the image is a baby, attired in a white onesie, that has a white cloth wrapped around their midsection and tied to a blooming cherry tree branch. The baby’s eyes are tightly closed, their mouth is open wide, and they grasp a branch of cherry blossoms with their left hand. A straw hat also is on the tree branch. E.J. Finnerty (1863-1901) was a druggist in Philadelphia. He created the firm Finnerty, McClure & Co. in 1891 and continued in the trade until his death.

Birthday card depicting a racist caricature an African American girl standing as flowers grow over a fence and towards a house. Shows the African American girl portrayed with exaggerated features and attired in an orange dress with purple polka dots, blue shoes, and blue and orange bows in her hair. At her feet are yellow, purple, blue, and orange flowers. She speaks in the vernacular that the flowers are “climbing up de birfday fence,” which is the yellow fence depicted in the right. The flowers, made of cloth, grow over it and towards a house, which has flowers growing on the roof. The house is blue with green shutters that are falling apart.

This collection contains the personal papers of Francis Daniel Pastorius, a German immigrant who founded the settlement of Germantown, which would later be incorporated into Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pastorius was trained as a lawyer, and in 1683 purchased land in Pennsylvania on behalf of members of the German Frankfort Company. He is also known for his anti-slavery stance, joining the Pennsylvania Quakers in signing a protest against slavery in 1688 (the first anti-slavery document written in the United States). This collection dates from 1683-1719 and contains ten bound volumes and one folder of loose manuscripts of Pastorius’ personal papers. This includes his writings on farming and beekeeping, poetry, the beginnings of a German dictionary, a commonplace book, letters, and a book of medical ailments and remedies.
