This is an artificial collection created by HSP staff, containing manuscript materials from many sources. The collection is arranged alphabetically and primarily by individual, but unlike the "flat" collection, is far smaller in extent. Within this alphabetical arrangement are small collections documenting a number of individuals and filed by the name of the compiler. Other small collections, arranged by family name, consist of material pertaining to several generations. Materials include correspondence, legal documents, drawings, newsclippings, photographs and printed material as well as photostats, photocopies and typescripts of original manuscripts. Correspondence sometimes includes letters to and from the individual represented.

An account of the resource
Frank M. Etting's connection with the Historical Society began in 1855 when he was elected recording secretary at age 22. After a decade in the army, 1861-1870, he returned to Philadelphia to begin a career of public service. He became director of the city's public schools, chairman of the committee to restore Independence Hall, and director of the Historical Department of the Centennial, 1876. The collection represents both Etting's personal interests and his professional concerns. It consists of three distinct groups of papers: an autograph collection containing materials of distinguished Americans and Europeans, 1558-1887; family papers, 1739-1847, which document the efforts of the Gratz, Frank, Etting, and Hart families and their associates in the settlement and development of trade in early Pennsylvania and contain some information on the domestic affairs of these families; and, finally, a group of papers on the public and professional career of Frank M. Etting.

An account of the resource
David McNeely Stauffer was an eminent civil engineer, author, and antiquarian. From 1893 to 1913 he devoted much of his time to the extra-illustration of "Westcott's History of Philadelphia, 1609-1829" as printed in the Sunday Dispatch. The total collection amounted to 32 folio volumes and contained portraits of people mentioned in the text, signed letters, manuscripts relating to the city, maps, plans, prints and drawings. The volumes have since been disbound.

The Union Pacific Railway, later the Kansas Pacific Railway, was chartered in July 1863 as part of the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862. The railway was to create a southerly branch of the transcontinental railroad.
Map bordered by 20 advertisements for Northeast businesses related to railroads, including engineering, surveyors, telegraph, mathematical, and boiler instruments; railway tires, engines, switches, joints and varnishes; as well as a time detector and wood working machinery. Philadelphia businesses include Baldwin Locomotive Works; W.Y. McAllister; N. & A. Middleton; James W. Queen & Co; W.H. Wharton, Jr.; and Verree & Mitchell. Four advertisements include vignettes.

Collection of carte-de-visite portraits of the city employees, attired in suits, seated, and one arm resting on a side table. Identified sitters include John H. Dye, surveyor and draughtsman; Jesse Lightfoot, surveyor; Strickland Kneass, chief engineer and surveyor; George Sturges, recording clerk; and John F. Wolf, surveyor. The Department of Surveys was officially organized in 1863 under the aegis of the Board of Surveyors created in 1855 with Strickland Kneass as chief engineer and president.

Includes a pictorial envelope and letterhead containing an illustration depicting a collage of imagery, including a map of America bordered by scrolls of "Tracing Cloth," "Drawing Papers. Mounted and Unmounted," and "Tracing Papers"; a globe; lantern; and small tree branch. A banner reading "Map Publishers and Mounters" lays atop the map. Letterhead also contains a vignette depicting the monogram "E.P. & Co." intertwined with "N" surmounting a stack of bound works marked "Railway Guides"; "County Atlases"; Indexed Business Atlas U.S."; "General Atlas - World." A volume marked ’Guide Books" rests on the side of the stack of volumes. Banners reading "E. P. Noll & Co. Map Publishers and Mounters" and "No. 17 North 6th St. Philadelphia, Pa." complete the vignette. Insert announces the "increased facilities" of the manufacturers and details their mounting services for numerous mediums, including "Maps, Atlas sheets...Tracings...Show Cards...Solar Prints, Photographs &c. &c.," and "’Atlas Sheets on cloth a specialty. Mounting of Show Cards, Banners, Calendars, &c, with ’Tin’ at lowest rates, as well as products offered such as large sheets of drawing papers and mailing tubes. Form letter on letterhead solicits estimates and trials "on any Engraving, Printing, Binding, Mounting or Lithographs" for prospective patrons, including "Real Estate Dealers, Land Companies, Surveyors, and Civil Engineers" for the "best class of work at exceedingly low prices." E. P. Noll & Co. was established in 1881 by Edward P. Noll and G. Cusimir. In 1890, E. P. Noll assumed sole ownership of the firm which remained in operations into the 1920s.

This scathing cartoon was widely popularized in 18th century America, of William Cobbett, who is in fact being protrayed as a porcupine with some rather crude opinions. He is shown receiving support by those that include the Devil and the British Lion who encourange his views. The woman to the left is shown weeping above a portrait of Benjamin Franklin.
Full title is "See Porcupine, in Colours just Portray'd, Urg'd by old Nick, to drive his dirty trade, Veil'd in darkness, acts the assassins part, And triumphs much to stab you to the heart." Also addressed is the impressment of American seamen by the British Navy.
