Description
An account of the resource
This is a collection of 122 original, mostly nineteenth century maps, all in "booklet" form. They represent imprints made by a number of different American agencies, most prominently, those in Philadelphia and New York City. And they are comprised of a mix of state, regional, and city maps. Most numerous are maps of Baltimore and Maryland, New York state and New York City, and the state of Virginia. Several other states east of the Mississippi River are also represented, such as Ohio, Kentucky, and Georgia, and there are a few maps of western states, including Minnesota, California, Texas, and Arizona. There are also four travellers maps featuring, respectively, New England, Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Among the subjects dealt with in the papers from 1780-1848 are: Pennsylvania legislation, political affairs at Lancaster, Republican and Adamite factions, promotion of manufacture, controversies over the charter of the United States Bank, embargoes, the British orders in council, agitation for war with England, opposition of the Federalists to government war loan; French decrees affecting American ships and commerce, foreign trade, New England political factions, land claims, Andrew Jackson's conduct in Florida and New Orleans, restoration of the Capitol, political appointments, the Missouri question, ratification of the Spanish treaty, Marquis de Lafayette's reception at Harrisburg, presidential elections, religion, Texas slavery contest, California, Roberts's appointment as collector of the Port of Philadelphia, his dismissal by President Taylor, and various other subjects. Roberts's letters to his wife, 1814-1847, describe economic conditions, domestic and cultural life, travel, and agricultural and industrial development. Other letters, 1852-1930, are from various members of the Roberts family. There are also genealogical notes of the Roberts family, poetry, speeches, proclamations, indentures, and newspaper clippings.

Description
An account of the resource
This collection is comprised of business records and correspondence of the Ridgway and Bishop families of New Jersey and Philadelphia. Primary individuals within the collection include Jacob Elwood Ridgway and his son-in-law John Israel Bishop, both of whom invested heavily in various mining companies, such as the Rio Del Monte Gold Mines Company, Restaurado Mining and Milling Company, California King Gold Mining Company, Montana Gold Dredging Company, and Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Gold Mining Company. These companies are represented to various degrees in the collection through account books, stock certificates, and other items. The collection also highlights John I. Bishop's Jersey cattle farm, "Ogston" in Columbus, New Jersey, through farm and financial ledgers. The farm ran from the early 1800s until the 1980s. Additionally, Bishop helped build Sparks Shot Tower. Still standing on Carpenter Street in Philadelphia, it was one of the nation's first shot towers. In the collection is a financial volume pertaining to the tower that was kept by Bishop. There are also some family records, such as a grouping of family Bibles, as well as a few published volumes, including New Jersey Genealogy, Contemporary American Biography, and Biographical Review: Burlington and Camden Counties.
