An account of the resource
There are several families represented in this collection of personal correspondence--Gore, Elliot, and Cathcart. It is unclear as to the familial connection with the Plumstead family. The only link is that a Mrs. Gore, sister of Elizabeth Elliot, is staying with the Plumstead family who reside on Front Street in Philadelphia. In the letters are discussions of family and personal matters, particularly health issues. Based on the paperstock, some of these letters appear to be copies. According to a note inserted with this material, most of these letters have been printed in Eugene Devereaux' "Chronicles of the Plumstead Family" (Philadelphia, 1887).

Some of these poems were published in the "Port Folio" under the name of "Quevado."

An account of the resource
Anti-Jackson cartoon alleging that irrational motives influenced the President’s decision to destroy the Bank of the United States. Depicts a terrified Jackson, in his bedroom, fighting the hydra, "U.S. Bank," during a nightmare. References to the corruption of the Bank are inscribed on the creature’s many heads, including "deposits," "pension," and "bribery." Jackson, sword in hand, screams about "crushing the monster, Bank president Nick Biddle, Hell, and corruption" and asks the whereabouts of "Jack Downing," who attempts to restrain him by his suspenders. "Downing" pleads with the President to return to bed as "Biddle ain’t here, nor the Devil nother as I no on."

Collection of carte-de-visite portraits of the city employees, attired in suits, seated, and one arm resting on a side table. Identified sitters include John H. Dye, surveyor and draughtsman; Jesse Lightfoot, surveyor; Strickland Kneass, chief engineer and surveyor; George Sturges, recording clerk; and John F. Wolf, surveyor. The Department of Surveys was officially organized in 1863 under the aegis of the Board of Surveyors created in 1855 with Strickland Kneass as chief engineer and president.

The first part contains business letters and records, 1700-1748, of Samuel Powel, the original settler, and of his son Samuel. They were general merchants trading with Europe and the West Indies. The next Samuel Powel was mayor of Philadelphia in 1775 and again in 1789. He married Elizabeth Willing who became well known as a social leader. Present are Samuel Powel's exercises at the University of Pennsylvania, 1759; his business papers, 1767-1771; and a list of his property, 1779.
The papers of Elizabeth Powel comprise a group of pocket almanacs, 1793-1822, with diary entries; receipt books, 1793-1801; personal account books, 1794-1800; and correspondence, 1772-1823, including copies of her own letters. Among the correspondents are George Washington, Bishop William White, William Bingham, Rev. Jacob Duché, and others of equal prominence.
