An account of the resource
Anti-Jackson cartoon alleging that irrational motives influenced the President’s decision to destroy the Bank of the United States. Depicts a terrified Jackson, in his bedroom, fighting the hydra, "U.S. Bank," during a nightmare. References to the corruption of the Bank are inscribed on the creature’s many heads, including "deposits," "pension," and "bribery." Jackson, sword in hand, screams about "crushing the monster, Bank president Nick Biddle, Hell, and corruption" and asks the whereabouts of "Jack Downing," who attempts to restrain him by his suspenders. "Downing" pleads with the President to return to bed as "Biddle ain’t here, nor the Devil nother as I no on."

Parody of Cervante’s Don Quixote satirizing events from the Jackson presidency, particularly his destruction of the Bank of the United States, depicting Jackson as Quixote and Van Buren as Sancho. Contains twelve titled scenes: (1) "Signor Don Quixote" seated in a study surrounded by books adressing character flaws, weapons, and paintings of notable dictators Nero and Dionysus; (2) "Don Quixote Receiving his Degree" in front of a group of amused spectators; (3) "The Don Attacking Certain Bags in a Certain Public House", an allusion to Jackson’s removal of the federal deposits from the Bank of the United States showing political opponents Clay and Webster attempting to stave offthe attack; (4) "Certain Carriers Approaching Don Quixote" depicting Jackson and Van Buren confronted by a crowd protesting the removal of the federal deposits; (5) "Don Quixote’s Attack on the Giants" (i.e., the Bank of the United States) under the view of Van Buren; (6) "Don Quixote’s Interview with the Canon," probably pro-Jackson newspaper editor Francis Blair, with whom Jackson discusses becoming an "Emperor" and promoting Van Buren’s career; (7) "Don Quixote Chagrined at the statement of Nicholas" Biddle, who refuses to give up funds and documents committed to the Bank by Congress; (8) "Private Confab Between Sancho & his Master" in which Van Buren’s poor public image is discussed; (9) "The Don & Sancho with Eyes & Ears Stopped Mounted on their Hobby," an allusion to the influence of Jackson’s "Kitchen Cabinet" of informal advisors on the President’s policy decisions; (10) "Don Quixote addressing certain Bound captives whose liberation he in vain attempted to accomplish," a reference to Jackson’s failed attempt to remove the pension fund from the Bank; (11) "Constitutional Insanity (i.e.) The Don about to Figure It on Board Ship" depicting Jackson and Van Buren in front of the idle warship the "Constitution"; and (12) "The Knight on His Way Home & Sancho in the High Road to Promotion" depicting Jackson returning to his Tenessee estate while Van Buren is tossed into the air on an 1837 map of the United States by several men, including the cartoon’s artist David Claypoole Johnston.

Cartoon parodying the windmill trope from Cervante’s Don Quixote to satirize the corruption in the department of the United States Navy during the Civil War. Depicts the head of Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, atop a windmill comprised of a base inscribed with the names of Confederate forts and cities near strategic ports; three vanes shaped like ships; and a fourth vane adorned with a fox. It rests on a platform inscribed, "Navy Department 1861-5." A Don Quixote figure rides a horse labeled, "Charleston" and "April 1862" toward the windmill. He carries a shield inscribed "Wade and Davis Manifesto" (manifesto written by Republican Senators Benjamin Wade and Henry Winter Davis criticizing Lincoln’s misuse of the executive power in the management of the former Confederate states) and a lance adorned with a banner inscribed, "Board of Admiralty." Behind him, John P. Hale (i.e, Squire Sancho), dubious former Chariman of the Naval Committee sits on a donkey labeled, "U.S. Ex. Ex." He wears a hat labeled "All Hale," a jacket labeled, "Tricky. Navy Agencies," and carries several scrolls, inscribed, "Hunt," "Halifax," "Dover Powder," "Gough," "$300," and "$200." He complains of the need to drive "Welles & Fox (Assistant Secretary of the Navy) from the public treasury." In the background, an "Engineer & Lawyer" stands with his arms outstretched and labeled, "To the Navy Dept." while reeling off a list of naval projects.

Tucker after the work of Thomas Birch, showing European and American landscapes and landmarks, animal portraiture, and genre and Biblical scenes. Landscape and landmark views mainly depict the Eastern United States and Great Britain. Titles include Passaic Falls; Bandit’s Home; The Woodlands, near Philadelphia-Seat of J. Lisle Esq.; Philadelphia from the Elm Tree, Kensington; The Prison at Venice; Abbey Gate of St. Edmundsbury, Suffolk; The Little Irish Girl; The City of Pompeii; The Deluge; The Three Maries at the Tomb of Christ; The Residence of Samuel Breck Esq. on the Schuylkill; Barlborough Hall, Derbyshire; Church Street, St Paul’s Church & the Cemetery Gate of St. Augustine’s Monastery, Canterbury; The Happy Family; and Plate XV from a 1782 edition of Don Quixote. Several of the views contain persons on foot, images of estates or rural life, farm animals, and modes of transportation on land or sea. Animal portraitures depict birds, sheep, goats, cows, and a wolf. Scrapbook also contains early European landscape lithographs designed by J. Rothmuller and G. Englemann; a lithograph signed with the monogram JPL; illustrated title pages from Oliver Goldsmith’s "The Traveler" and William Shenstone’s "The School Mistress"; a portrait of Elizabeth Fry; cutouts depicting a tiger and a Moses-like figure; watercolor and gouache drawings of flowers, a butterfly and a ruins; a pressed feather; and three newspaper clippings referring to poets M. LaMartine, Lady Flora Hastings, and Felicia Hemans.
